Message from Cumbria Trading Standards

Cumbria Trading Standards are warning residents in Keswick and West Cumbria to be on their guard against cold callers offering to carry out tarmacking or driveway work.  Rogue tarmacers are now claiming to be carrying out works nearby, have a fault with their equipment and need to offload the tarmac as soon as possible, so they will supply at a price that is too good to be true. We would like to reinforce previous messages that people should use extreme caution when approached by cold callers offering to carry out any work.  These types of callers often use persuasive or aggressive tactics to get people to agree to having work carried out and then charge a far higher price, sometimes thousands of pounds more, than was quoted for extremely poor quality work.

Cold callers often fail to provide a legally required cancellation notice (which informs and lets you know how to cancel the work) which enables the householder to cancel the work within a statutory fourteen day cooling off period. Remember if you want them to start work within your 14 days cooling off period you must give them written permission to do so.

Trading Standards provide the following advice:

  • DO NOT do business with cold callers who knock on your door uninvited.
  • Look out for those who are vulnerable within your neighbourhoods and family.
  • Consider joining the Trading Standards Nominated Neighbour Scheme.
  • Report suspicious activity to Trading Standards or the Police.
If you have been approached recently, have received a flyer or have any information please contact Trading Standards via the Citizens Advice Consumer Helpline on 03454 04 05 06 or contact Cumbria Police on 101.
