Fake fifty pound notes - be aware

Alert message sent 18/12/2018 12:12:00

Information sent on behalf of Cumbria Police

Cumbria Constabulary would like to make everyone aware - particularly businesses - that there has been a spate of fake £50 notes in circulation. A scam known as "ringing the change" whereby an item of small monetary value is purchased and a fake note used to pay for it, so the business loses the item and the change. For example an item for less than £5 is paid for using a fake £50 or £20. Please check all large denomination notes as a matter of routine.

Description of current suspect -

dark hair
blue tooth ear piece
possible foreign accent

Seen around West Cumbria but currently sighted in Grasmere and Keswick areas.
Please be vigilant - report all suspicious incidents / potential sightings on 101.
Always use 999 in an emergency.
